Mobilizing Funds to support flood victims in Benin

Benin is exceptionally flooded. The country has not seen such an ecological and human disaster for decades. Half of the country is submerged in water, rendering over 500,000 people homeless. 55 out of 77 municipalities (counties) of the country are suffering from severe hardships.

Shock, trauma, hopelessness, grief, sadness and pain have become the condition of the flood victims. They need us: Benin citizens around the world, especially, in the US.

Love of one's country is demonstrated in times like this so let's give.

Mr. Stanislas Kpognon
Former Finance Minister of Benin is leading an effort to harness support to bring funds.

Aid workers also fear an outbreak of cholera, a bacterial infection
spread through contaminated water.

Flooding began in mid-September when heavy rains caused the Niger
River in Benin's north to overflow. Rainfall continues across the
country.

We are trying to help the victims in a concerted way and raise funds
to give to the local NGO on the ground helping with the relief efforts
particulary Catholic Relief Services CRS.org.

 1.  WHO ? - the beneficiaries are poor, vulnerable Beninese leaving
in geographically depressed areas or beside rivers (Mono, Oueme,
Niger) which have gone over their beds to invade people, destroying
their houses, belongings, livestocks, and crops etc. 600  Schools,
most primary, are flooded, preventing pupils from attending classes.
For example the situation of people living in Ganvié (village
lacustre), in Aguégué )is awfully
critical.

2.  HOW ?  - We are planing to seek Catholic Relief Services CRS.org
help, a catholic relief
type of NGO specialized in this kind of reach out services. This NGO
is reliable and efficient.

3. HOW MUCH ? - The larger the financial support, the better. UNDP is
promising something on the order of 7 to 8 million US dollars. Recently a local leading GSM (cellular company) donate a contribution of $ 60,000 going through
CARITAS  to  reach the flood victims. I suggest
we target for $ 20,000 (ten millions FCFA) which will be appreciated.

4. LOGISTICS of FUNDS : Donors can submit donations through the
website
http://goodheartsforbenin.weebly.com/.
These funds will arrive to Mr. Stanislas KPOGNON, Former Finance
Minister, who is in Cotonou and will transfer them to the Catholic
Relief Services, (CRS) office in Cotonou to help the victim directly.

5. REPORTING - A follow up report will be written detailing
contributions: who and how much and resulting impact made.

Victims are in need of the following. Lists of items provided include
: food, drink water, medications/pharmacies, clothings, shelters,
mosquito nets, varied items for primary schooling.

                 Thank you for your GENEROUSITY.
